As Halloween approaches, we recommend that pet owners keep their cats and dogs indoors after dark for their safety. Fireworks can cause significant distress for pets, leading them to flee in fear.

The noise and flashing lights from fireworks can be terrifying for pets, causing them to attempt to escape. Please make sure your pet's microchip information is up to date with your phone number and home address. If you have a dog, ensure their ID tag is still attached to their collar or harness.

When opening your door to trick or treaters, it is recommended to keep your pet behind at least one closed door. You might also consider turning off your doorbell to minimize stress for your pets.

Pet owners need to be mindful of the potential toxicity of chocolate and sweets, and to keep these out of reach of their pets.

Some of our fantastic volunteers were at the Bridge Center in Tullamore on Saturday, showcasing the incredible work we do as part of the Offaly Volunteer Expo! The Pet Vet Tullamore is holding an Open Day in their vet clinic on Saturday, 10th October from 3pm to 5pm. You will get a chance to meet the fantastic team on the day and one of our volunteers will attend too. Aisling Deverall, pet photographer, will attend on the day, so bring along your pet for a photo!

We are in desperate need of foster carers. We supply everything you need, all you need is to give a kitten / cat some love and a safe space to live. We are in a position that we cannot take in any cats or kittens at the minute.

Integra LifeSciences in Tullamore organized a GoFundMe for the OSPCA as part of a raffle, and they managed to raise €408 for our charity! They mentioned, "You guys are really appreciated at our site, so we were thrilled to support local with our fundraiser."

Meet Orlaith, who just turned 11 and is already making a big impact! This amazing, kind-hearted girl chose to spend her birthday money on food for the animals in our care. A huge thank you for thinking of us!

Hot weather is a major seasonal risk for dogs. Unlike us, dogs can’t sweat much; they mainly cool off by panting, which makes them more prone to overheating than most people think. Every summer, lots of dogs get sick from the heat, and sadly, many don’t make it. The wonderful 5th & 6th class students, recently held an Enterprise Day where they made and sold crafts etc. to their school community. The students, together with their families choose two charities to send the proceeds of the event to. We were delighted to be told by the lovely Michelle, a teacher in Ballyboy National School, that we were one of the recipients.

All those involved with the OSPCA, especially the animals in our care, would like to sincerely thank the students, their families and Michelle for their generous donation.

Hedgehog Conservation Ireland, along with researchers from the University of Galway and Oxford, is inviting the public to participate in the first-ever Great Big All-Ireland Hedgehog Count.

The project's goal is to assist scientists in gaining a better understanding of the hedgehog population status in Ireland.

The count will commence next Monday, 8 June, and will last for one week.

Elaine O’Riordan, a researcher from the University of Galway and lead researcher for the Irish Hedgehog Survey, encourages people to search for hedgehogs in their gardens, local parks, green spaces, or woods.
